What an Honor

Hey all,

I’ve been thinking a lot about how far we’ve come since we started this peer support initiative back in January. After 11 months of showing up, explaining what we’re doing, building programming, and seeing the community really adopt it, I’m proud to say it’s a huge success. It’s been so necessary– life is always lifin’!!

On my end, I’ve been wrestling with how much to talk about the drugs on our block. As my dear Mikey says “I try not to give people a reason to go somewhere else.” He’s so right, but I think you guys investing in this neighbhood will help keep you here anyway, so here’s the tea: I’ve been navigating the increased drug activity in the neighborhood.

I can’t go anywhere without Narcan on me. New unhoused people come to the block, score, and some of them OD. It’s bad for the dealers buisness, and its gonna be bad for mine. I know most of our unhoused neighbors, so when someone new shows up, they stand out like a sore thumb. I make sure to engage, keep an eye on them. I’m not here to police their drug use—drug users are gonna use. I’m here to call 911 when they look unwell, to prevent another life lost.

We have narcan in the shala. Please take one if you could use it in your neighborhood.

At the same time, I’ve been checking in with local businesses, seeing how they’re holding up, and of course, building more peer support. That support has done wonders for me, too. I’ve been learning from people who have been around the block (I can’t beleive I get to actually use that phrase for real) for a long time. They’ve been mentoring me, glad to have someone with what they might call “youthful enthusiasm”—which, let me tell you, feels pretty wild in my 40s!

A learning organization requires growth and personal mastery from the top down, and that starts with vulnerability. So, here’s some stuff you may have caugtht in passing: I started medication for my heart because of a family history of heart attacks. The medication took about four weeks to kick in, and while I’m doing great now, one of the side effects was feeling extra irritable. That mixed with everything else– the neighborhood, my family’s health, the renovations — well, it made things… interesting. I’m already pretty mercurial by nature, but with both of my parents in and out of the hospital these past six months—my mom had her kidney removed two weeks ago—it’s been a lot to handle. I also haven’t spoken to that side of my family since Breonna Taylor’s murder, and honestly, that hasn’t helped either. Let’s just say I’ve been watching how my own choices have impacted me, my family, and my community. It’s sometimes painful, but it’s also undeniably beautiful.

Through all of this, I’ve felt so supported. The moms in our crew elevated me when I wanted to beat myself down. Our elders shared their wisdom. And the younger folks kept me energized with their vigor. I got to receive as I often give — wow, candor. wow. But the system is working exactly as its been designed.

We persisted. And we’ve built something I’m really proud of. Something that’s going to continue and evolve and grow.

This community we’ve created? It’s solid because we’ve built it with the yamas and niyamas, and infused it with anti-fragility, self-organization while staying true to our purpose. We’ve made room for leadership to be vulnerable, to learn, and to grow. That’s what keeps us strong.

We have a LOT of leaders in this room. You all care for families, firms, communities, and so much more. Theres this old adage that if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room… and I never really have to worry about that. But I also know there’s no room for false humility or ego here—there’s just too much at stake. It’s an honor to serve you.

Here’s the thing: worry feels like action, but it’s really just self-harm. Karma yoga is the yoga of right action. Yogis get it like systems thinkers get it– its about noting trends, recognizing patterns, and taking steps when the time is right. That’s what being a yogi is about—responding with awareness and intention. A lot of people think they’re doing something by worrying, or even by spreading “awareness” online in echo chambers, but real change happens on the ground, in the real world. It happens when we show up on our block, in our city, in our community—both large (the neighborhood) and small (our Ashtanga yoga family).

So, here’s the truth: I’m over the moon. I’m close to tears in awe an awful lot lately. I’m so proud of all of you. I’m proud of me. Its working.

We’re a true learning organization, and we’re living out the things I’ve been talking about—anti-fragility, values-driven growth, and self-organization. We’re seeing it happen right here, in real-time, and it feels damn good.

Thank you for being part of this, for your resilience, and for showing up. There are so many times I’ve wondered why there is a compulsion to be a member of a club that wouldn’t have you. This is a club that I’d want to join, because I know it’d have me. Together, we’re creating something that will last. I’m proud of what we’ve built, and I’m so excited to see where we go next.

With love and gratitude,

Michael
PS: this is really on my mind because our arts and craftsy social was the most well attended yet, and my cousin mara joined us. We made stuff for others. We made stuff for us. I got to invite my family in, as so many have invited yours. It feels so nice and my heart is so full.

The Heart of It All: Supporting the Ones Who Stand Up (by moving over)

At the Yoga Club, we know we rely on you guys to keep the doors open, and so means that we sometimes choose community values over avoidance of discomfort– and that’s intentional. We’re investing in doing quality work, in making this a place that sustains itself and offers deep, valuable practices. But at the core, our aim is to support those who are out there standing up for their communities—the organizers, the advocates, the ones who work tirelessly to bring people together. They’re the ones getting the permits, organizing rallies, keeping our rights to assemble alive and vibrant. Our programs are here to nurture those who create change at the grassroots level, ensuring they have a space to recharge, to find strength, and to keep going. That means each and every one of you doing the radical act of self discovery. Becoming who you are is a radical act.

And, let’s face it, activism is uncomfortable. It’s dirty, sweaty, and doesn’t fit neatly into a schedule. It disrupts traffic, interrupts routine, and sometimes makes people grumble about inconvenience. And sometimes activism means scooting closer to a wall than you might like. But real change isn’t meant to be convenient—and thank goodness for that.
