A 2018 review published by Georgetown University found that mindfulness and yoga training improved mental health and behavior in teens dealing with anxiety, trauma, and chronic stress. As reported cases of clinical anxiety in adolescents rise, the review examined multiple studies including peer-reviewed research and randomized controlled trials.

The movement practices of yoga were considered especially beneficial for teens dealing with trauma or chronic stress. Results included better self-esteem, fewer angry outbursts, less need for medication, fewer physical complaints, and improved stress-management skills. Researchers noted that mind-body techniques have few or no side effects.

The recommendation is clear: these practices should be tried before medications. They are effective and cost-efficient.

Mind-body practices work for teens too. Fewer side effects than medication, and the evidence supports trying them first.
