A 2020 study examined yoga’s effects on people living with both chronic pain and depression, two conditions that frequently co-occur and reinforce each other. Participants completed a yoga program and were assessed on pain levels, mood, and functional capacity. The results showed significant improvements across all three measures.
The dual nature of the findings is what makes this study stand out. Chronic pain worsens depression, and depression amplifies the perception of pain. Interventions that address only one condition often fail because the other remains untreated. Yoga appeared to interrupt this cycle by working on both simultaneously.
The mechanism likely involves multiple pathways: physical movement reduces stiffness and pain sensitivity, breathing practices modulate the nervous system, and the attentional focus of practice interrupts ruminative thought patterns associated with depression. The combined effect may explain why yoga outperformed single-target interventions in this population.
