Functional Primary
Sixteen weeks inside Yoga Chikitsa — Primary Series, posture by posture, looked at as a set of joint demands rather than a set of shapes to arrive at.
Primary is called yoga therapy and it earns the name by being relentlessly ordinary: the same shapes, the same order, the same breath, for years. This is the season that makes that repetition worth something — the standing sequence built properly, the seated fold, the Marichyasana bind clinic, the lift, and Kurmasana, which is the crux.
The arc
- Foundations and the Standing Sequence — weeks 1–5
- The Seated Fold and the Bind — weeks 6–9
- The Lift and the Crux — weeks 10–13
- Backbend and Integration — weeks 14–16
What you get
- Sixteen sessions — workshop format. We take the week’s material apart, build it back up, and put it in the count.
- The Functional Primary course on Ashtanga Tech — a page per week, yours to keep. See the course
- Eighteen letters — one each week, plus a welcome and a closing letter.
- An FRC joint-prep layer for the hardest demand of each week.
- The workbook, and a mid-term self-practice checkpoint.
- Functional Ashtanga: The Method and the Manifesto — the book, yours to keep.
The book
Functional Ashtanga comes with this program — the manifesto. Why the method is worth practising at all, what it is actually for, and how to hold it as a philosophy of practice rather than a set of shapes to perform. It is the argument underneath every week of Primary.
What runs through every session
The count — taught first, asana second. Tristana — breath, bandha, drishti. Most Viable Posture — every shape is a spectrum, not a target; you work the version you can breathe in today, through four lanes: Therapeutic, Restorative, Maintenance and Challenge. Challenge means more load, more time, less support — not more depth.
Three rules
Don’t hurt yourself. Be honest. Try to have a good time. In that order.
Who it is for
Practitioners building the root of the method, and anyone who wants Primary to stop being a list of shapes performed in order.
