Never Say Never

A 72-year-old future doctor reminded me that practice isn’t about being ready—it’s about showing up, again, on purpose.

🕉️ KEY CONCEPTS

Tapas
Steady, disciplined heat—the willingness to keep going when it’s uncomfortable.
Sankalpa
A clear intention that comes from the heart, not from fear or image-management.
Abhyasa
Practice as repeated return—showing up again and again without dramatizing it.
Vairagya
Non-grasping—loosening the need for perfect timing, perfect outcomes, or perfect approval.

Seventy-two. Medical school. Residency next. If that doesn’t rearrange your excuses, nothing will.

Dawn Zuidgeest-Craft didn’t “find time.” She made a choice. Kids. Work. Divorce. Remarriage. More kids. Then a brain hemorrhage in the family and the quiet alarm bell: life is short.

Here’s the part I like. She’s not doing it to prove she still can. She’s doing it because she enjoys it. Not rent-energy. Not approval-energy. Joy-energy. That’s rare. That’s also yoga, when we stop using the mat as a place to perform our personality.

And yes, she did morning yoga on the beach with classmates young enough to be her grandkids. She failed a biochem exam and considered quitting. Then she kept going. That’s the practice. Not the pose. The return.

So if you’re waiting for the perfect season, the perfect body, the perfect schedule—good luck with that. The clock is not your enemy. The story you tell about the clock is.

Read the article if you want the details: The Washington Post via PressReader. Then do the small brave thing today. The one you’ve been postponing with impressive logic.

"“When you have to do it for work … you feel like, ‘I got to do this so that I can pay my rent.’ I want to do this because I really enjoy this”"

— Kyle Melnick, The Washington Post

Start late. Start messy. Start with real desire.
